The treatment
What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment where a tooth-coloured resin is applied directly to your teeth and hand-sculpted by your dentist. It rebuilds worn or chipped edges, closes small gaps, evens out uneven lengths and masks discolouration.
Because the material bonds to the surface of the tooth, there is usually no need to drill away healthy enamel — which makes it one of the gentlest ways to change the appearance of a smile.
It suits patients who want a visible improvement without the commitment, cost or preparation of porcelain veneers.
Composite bonding can help with
- Chipped or cracked front teeth
- Stained or discoloured enamel
- Uneven, short or worn-down edges
- Misshapen or pointed teeth
- Small gaps between teeth
Honest assessment
Is bonding right for you?
Bonding is likely a good fit if:
- You have one or two chipped or worn front teeth
- Your teeth are healthy but uneven in length or shape
- You want a visible change without altering healthy enamel
- You'd like to see the result the same day
- You want something reversible while you decide on longer-term options
You may need a different approach if:
- Your teeth are significantly crowded or rotated — straightening usually comes first
- You grind your teeth heavily without a night guard
- You have active decay or gum disease that needs treating first
- You want a very large change in shade or shape across the whole smile
We'll tell you honestly at your consultation which of these applies to you.

Composite bonding vs veneers
| Composite bonding | Porcelain veneers | |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth preparation | Little to none | Enamel reduction required |
| Treatment time | Often a single visit | Two or more visits |
| Reversibility | Reversible in most cases | Irreversible |
| Repairs | Repaired and re-polished chairside | Usually remade |
| Investment | Lower cost per tooth | Higher cost per tooth |
| Longevity | Typically several years with good care | Typically longer than bonding with good care |
Longevity varies with your bite, oral hygiene and habits such as grinding. We describe typical ranges rather than guaranteed lifespans, and will give you a realistic expectation for your own teeth at your consultation.
Better together
Whitening first, then bonding
Composite cannot be whitened once it has set, so the order of treatment matters. We whiten your natural teeth first using Enlighten or Pola systems, let the shade settle, then match your bonding to that brighter result.
The combination gives a brighter base colour with even, well-shaped edges — the reason most smile makeovers here begin with whitening.
- 1
Whiten with a custom take-home Enlighten or Pola kit
- 2
Allow the shade to stabilise for two weeks
- 3
Bond to your new, brighter shade
Tooth whitening is provided only to patients aged 18 and over, following a dental examination.

Dr Manraj Sandher
Principal Dentist — with a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and Invisalign

Manraj plans bonding case by case: edge design first, then hand-layered composite built up under magnification so the shape, translucency and surface texture read as natural enamel.
Where bonding is not the right answer — heavy wear, crowding or a large shade change — he will say so, and set out the alternatives with their costs before anything begins.
